Rose Painting Workshop

In this class you will create a rose painting in three sessions utilizing the painting methods of Henri Fantin-Latour. This can be taken without participating in the Fantin-Latour Master Copy Class, however we will be discussing his techniques during the lessons.

What you will learn in this class

Let's create original rose paintings using the techniques Henri Fantin-Latour. Creating new painting compositions after learning how a master artist created is the best way to guarantee the lessons are understood.

  • You will learn how to look at a rose photo reference and then adapt it into a painting.

  • You will learn how to paint using multiple layers of oil paint in an archival manner

  • You will learn how to maximize your paint mixtures and vary the amount of paint on your brush to create emotive effects with oil paint.

Roses are much loved, lush, many-petaled flowers.

We will explore how to use layers of paint to create expressive brushstrokes. Utilizing multiple paint layers to achieve a variety of effects.

  • In this workshop, students will learn how to paint roses. Capturing the delicate and fleeting beauty of these luscious flowers. Painting roses asks you to observe with intention while also seeking ways to simplify and abstract the color shapes seen.

  • Demonstrations will be given each day, with the first day focusing on laying in the base layers of oil paint, and the second day will show refine and add visual depth, and the final day will cover how to apply transparent and opaque glazes to further heighten the overall feeling of the floral arrangement.

  • Working from provided photo references, we will successfully create emotive paintings using classical and contemporary painting techniques in oils. All aspects of painting with flowers, learning to work with the individual characteristics of the flowers as well as the formal elements of representational painting (form, tone, value, color matching, edges, proportions, and composition), and paint application techniques such as laying in the first layer of paint, then subsequent layers, and finishing with glazes and scumbling.

  • This painting workshop includes demos and recorded painting reviews and guidance. All levels welcome!

  • For this class we will utilize technology and paint from photo references that I will provide.

  • All classes are taught via ZOOM, recordings are provided to enrolled students.
